FAQ: Distance from Sandakan to Sukau

Monday, May 10, 2010

Question:

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Sandakan at the end of the year and needed some information to give me an idea of how to plan this trip.

I will be going to the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sepilok Orang Utan Sancturary and plan to fit in a trip to Sukau to spot some wildlife. Below are my questions:

1. How far is Sepilok and Labuk Bay from Sandakan? Are the two sancturarys far from each other as well?

2. From what I understand, I've got to take a boat from Sandakan jetty to get to Sukau. How far will the journey from the jetty to Sukau be? Can I actually travel direct from the monkey sanctuaries to Sukau?

Answer:

Probiscus sanctuary offer schedule and private transfers from sandakan as follows:

Transportation to Labuk Sanctuary from Sandakan town

Private Vehicle ( Maximum 4 person) RM80nett per Vehicle per way

Private Vehicle ( Maximum 8 person) RM250nett per Vehicle per way

Shuttle bus service at Fixed Schedule RM15nett per person per way

Shuttle bus schedule :-

From Hotel Sandakan – Labuk Sanctuary 9.30am Daily

From Sepilok Center – Labuk sanctuary 10.30am Daily

From Sepilok Junction – Labuk Sanctuary 10.45am Daily

From Labuk Sanctuary – Sepilok/town 5.30pm Daily

Daily Best Viewing time of proboscis Monkeys:-

Platform A 9.30am & 2.30pm

Platform B 11.30am & 4.30pm

There is also a regular minibuses to Sakau from Sandakan main bus station. It takes about 3 hours and should cost around (RM15).

However if you plan to stay overnight on the river ask your lodge how much a private collection from Sandakan will be becuase we are staying at The Last Frontier and they have offered us a private transfer for RM25 or RM50 return.

To get directly to the Orang Utan centre from sandakan look for the blue bus marked 'Sepilok Batu 14' (RM3.50, 30 mins) from the local bus terminal on Jln Pryer. Minivans also take the trip every hour or so from behind centre point. Final return bus for sandakan leaves at 4:30pm. Alternatively ask you accomodation to arrange private transfer. Feeding times are 10 am and 3 pm and tickets are valid for one day. I believe that the afternoon feeding times are less busy.

Hope this has helped and hope you enjoy your trip.
